One room per floor
The building is four floors of a single volume held up by a line of cast iron columns. Every partition added since 1960 ran against that line rather than with it. We removed all of them and put back one room per floor, with the servicing pushed into the two ends where the building had always been thick.

The columns do the dividing
Nothing new touches a column. Where a room needs to be closed — a meeting room, the two quiet rooms on the third floor — the enclosure stops short of the iron and is glazed above, so the line reads uninterrupted from either end of the floor.
